Private vehicle purchase contract: a solid template for selling your car

When selling a car privately there is no dealer between both sides. A written purchase contract is therefore the most important document: it sets out the vehicle, price, payment method, handover date, liability exclusion and the documents handed over. Whether you are selling a car or buying it privately, this template produces a ready-to-sign PDF in minutes. Combined with the vehicle handover report it documents the whole transaction cleanly.

The generator is deliberately easy to use: you enter both parties, the vehicle details (make, model, VIN, licence plate, first registration, mileage), price and payment method into a form. The template works for the classic car purchase contract as well as when a vehicle is sold by a business to a private buyer. It automatically builds in the standard private-sale clauses: “sold as seen”, exclusion of liability for material defects, exclusion of warranty and handover of the vehicle papers.

What must a vehicle purchase contract contain?

  • Parties: full name and address of seller and buyer, optionally ID number.
  • Vehicle: make, model, VIN, licence plate, first registration, mileage.
  • Terms: price, payment method, handover date.
  • Liability exclusion: “sold as seen”, no warranty in a private sale (except fraudulently concealed defects).
  • Papers: registration certificate part I and II, service book, keys.

The purchase contract when selling your car

If you want to sell your vehicle privately, you need a contract that protects both sides: the seller from later claims (“sold as seen”) and the buyer from unclear promises. Enter the actual mileage and any known defects honestly, and record the actual payment in writing. That way you avoid disputes about the car sale after handover.

Tips for the contract

  • State the price in words and figures to avoid disputes about the amount.
  • Each party keeps one signed copy.
  • Combine the contract with a handover report recording the condition including defects.
