Calorie Calculator: basal and total daily energy expenditure

The calorie calculator estimates your personal calorie needs using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation. Enter gender, age, height, weight and activity level, and the tool returns your basal metabolic rate (BMR) and your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE).

What is the basal metabolic rate (BMR)?

Your BMR is the energy your body needs at complete rest to keep vital functions running, such as breathing, heartbeat, temperature and organ function. It is the foundation of any calorie target and depends mainly on gender, age, height and weight.

The Mifflin-St Jeor equation

  • Men: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age + 5
  • Women: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age − 161

What is TDEE?

TDEE is your BMR multiplied by an activity factor, from 1.2 (sedentary) to 1.9 (extremely active). It is the calorie intake at which your weight stays roughly stable.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the Mifflin-St Jeor equation?

It is considered one of the most accurate simple formulas for BMR and works well for most adults. The result is an estimate, not a measurement.
