BMI Calculator: Calculate and Understand Your Body Mass Index

The body mass index compares your weight with your height. This BMI calculator calculates your value and places it in a standard adult weight category, from underweight to obesity.

How BMI is calculated

The formula is body weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. Enter your weight and height, and the calculator does the rest. Choose either Metric (kg, cm) or Imperial (lb, ft + in) above.

What BMI can and cannot tell you

BMI is a useful first indicator, but it does not account for muscle mass, body composition, age, or individual health factors. For a complete assessment, consider waist circumference, body fat, fitness, nutrition, and advice from a health professional.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my BMI?

Your BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared, that is BMI = weight divided by (height in m)². In this calculator you simply select your weight and height with the sliders and the calculation happens automatically.

What BMI is considered normal?

According to the WHO classification, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered a normal weight for adults. Values below that count as underweight, from 25.0 overweight begins, and from 30.0 it is classed as obesity.

Is the BMI suitable for children and teenagers?

No, this calculator is designed for adults. For children and teenagers, percentiles that take age and sex into account are used, because the body is still growing.

Why do athletes still often have a high BMI?

The BMI does not distinguish between muscle mass and body fat. Athletes with a lot of muscle often have a high BMI even though their body fat percentage is low. Consider waist circumference and body fat as well.

What are the limits of the BMI?

The BMI does not account for muscle mass, fat distribution, age, or sex. It is a useful first indicator but does not replace a professional or medical assessment.

Are my data stored?

No. All calculations run right in your browser. Your input is not transmitted to our server or stored.
