Mileage calculator: commuter allowance 2026

The mileage calculator works out the Entfernungspauschale (commuter allowance). This lets you know how much you can claim as a tax deduction for your commute in your annual tax return.

The current rate (as of: 01/2026)

Since 01.01.2026, under the 2025 Tax Amendment Act, the allowance is €0.38 per kilometre from the first kilometre, flat rate, whether short or long distance. Previously (2021–2025) it was €0.30 for the first 20 km and €0.38 from the 21st km.

The €4,500 ceiling

The allowance is capped at €4,500 per calendar year (EStG § 9 sec. 2). A higher amount is only deductible if you use a motor vehicle for the commute. For a 60 km trip on 230 days you get 230 × €0.38 × 60 km = €5,244, so more than €4,500. With a car you can claim the full €5,244, without a car only €4,500. The calculator handles this with the car-use checkbox.

Important: one-way distance

The allowance is calculated only for the one-way distance (there OR back, not both) and only for full kilometres of the shortest road route, regardless of the means of transport. Legal basis: EStG § 9.

Classification

This is a tax deduction, not a direct refund. The amount is offset against your taxable income. Employer travel contributions reduce the claimable amount.

Not tax advice

The calculator serves for broad orientation and does not replace individual tax advice. Your specific tax situation may differ.

Frequently asked questions

How high is the 2026 commuter allowance?

Since 01.01.2026 it is €0.38 per km from the 1st km of the one-way trip, flat rate, no longer only from the 21st km (previously €0.30 for the first 20 km).

Is there a ceiling?

Yes. At most €4,500 per calendar year is deductible (EStG § 9 sec. 2). If you exceed it, the cap only falls away when you use a motor vehicle.

Do I count both ways?

No. Only the one-way distance (there OR back) counts, multiplied by the workdays per year.

Is the allowance a refund?

No. It is a deduction (EStG § 9) that reduces your taxable income and therefore your tax burden, not a direct payment.

Is my data stored?

No. All inputs are processed 100% locally in your browser and neither stored nor transmitted.
