Remove Word formatting and keep clean text
Do you have a Word document that became completely inconsistent along the way: bold here, italic there, mixed font sizes, colors and spacing? The Remove Word Formatting tool solves this with one click. It strips all formatting from a .docx file and leaves only the plain text, ready for you to freely reformat however fits your document.
Processing runs fully locally in your browser. Your Word file never leaves your device, is not uploaded and not stored on any server. You can safely clean confidential documents too. The tool handles common .docx files and returns a fresh, tidy Word document to download.
How it works
Select a Word file (.docx) and click Remove all formatting. The tool opens the file and removes every formatting property such as bold, italic, font family, font size, color, alignment, indents and line spacing. What remains are the text paragraphs with their paragraph and line breaks. The result is a tidy document with plain, freely reformattable text.
What is removed and what is kept
- Removed: bold, italic, underline, font families, font sizes, colors, highlights, alignment, indents, line spacing, bullet lists and styles.
- Kept: the complete text, paragraph breaks, line breaks within a paragraph and tabs.
- Note: tables are simplified into plain paragraphs so no formatting remnants survive.
Typical use cases
- Merging: several authors worked on a document and each formatted differently. One click makes everything consistent.
- Rebuild: you want to redo the content in a fresh layout and start from clean text.
- Cleaning: text copied from emails or web pages carries a lot of formatting junk you want to get rid of.
- Conversion: prepare the text for another program that only imports plain text cleanly.
Privacy and climate
Everything happens on your device, without upload and without an account. This conserves resources, since each locally processed file avoids a server request and thereby saves traffic and energy, as the IEA energy agency summarizes for local tools.
