Video to GIF: Turn a clip of your video into an animated GIF
Convert a short clip of your video into an animated GIF directly in your browser. Choose the start point and length of the clip, set frame rate, max width and quality, and your GIF is generated. Everything runs locally on your device: the video is not uploaded.
Note on quality: GIF is a lossy format that grows quickly with length and resolution. For small files, pick a short clip of a few seconds with a moderate width and frame rate.
How to make a GIF from your video
Load a local video, set the start position in percent and the clip length in seconds. Then choose the frame rate (5 to 20 fps), the max width (320, 480 or 640 px) and the color quality. Click "Create GIF" to start. A progress bar shows the status, and the finished GIF appears as a preview that you can download right away.
What the settings do
The start position sets where the clip begins, and the clip length controls how many seconds go into the GIF. Frame rate determines how smooth the animation looks, max width affects resolution and file size, and quality controls the color palette: 256 colors give finer detail, 128 colors give a smaller file.
Frequently asked questions
Which video formats can I convert to GIF?
Any format your browser can play through the video element, such as MP4, WebM or OGV. What matters is whether the codec can be decoded by your browser, not just the file extension.
How long can the clip be?
You can set the length freely in seconds. For handy file sizes we recommend a short clip of a few seconds, because longer clips quickly produce very large GIF files.
Which frame rate and size should I choose?
For smooth animations with little motion, 10 to 12 fps are enough; for fast scenes choose 15 or 20 fps. A smaller width such as 320 or 480 px shrinks the file significantly. Higher values increase both quality and file size.
Does the GIF loop automatically?
Yes. GIF files are played as an endless loop by browsers and most applications. If you want to avoid that, a format such as WebM or MP4 is a better choice.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The video is processed entirely locally in your browser and never transferred to or stored on our server. It stays on your device.
Am I allowed to convert any video?
Only process videos for which you hold the rights, for example your own recordings or freely licensed content. For other or protected videos you need the permission of the rights holder.
