Unit Price Calculator: find the price per unit
The price per unit calculator divides the total price by the quantity and shows you the unit price. This is handy when you compare offers at the shop: the bigger pack is not always the cheaper one. With the unit price you see at a glance which product is really the better deal, whether it is priced per kilogram, per litre, or per piece.
How it works
The formula is simple: price per unit = total price divided by quantity, that is unit price = price / quantity. You enter the total price, then the quantity and optionally the unit (pieces, kg, litres, metres and more). The tool divides the two values and shows the price per unit, for example in euros per kilogram.
Worked example with real numbers:
- Pack A: 1 kg of rice for 2.80. Unit price = 2.80 / 1 = 2.80 per kg.
- Pack B: 500 g (0.5 kg) for 1.50. Unit price = 1.50 / 0.5 = 3.00 per kg.
- Result: pack A is cheaper per kilogram even though its total price looks higher.
- Items sold by piece: 12.50 for 5 pieces gives 12.50 / 5 = 2.50 per piece.

What it cannot do
The calculator does not compare offers automatically: it works out a single unit price per entry. To compare two packs, compute them one after the other and compare the two results yourself. It also ignores discounts, deposits or special offers and works purely with the values you enter. Quantities that do not fit a unit exactly must be entered as numbers yourself.
Why the unit price matters
In the supermarket many shelf labels already show the price per unit, but not all of them do. The comparison is especially useful for store brands, bulk packs and special offers. It also helps for single purchases when you want to know whether the large pack is really worth it. When quantities are sold in different units (grams instead of kilograms), convert everything to the same unit first so the comparison is fair.
Frequently asked questions
How is the price per unit calculated?
The calculator divides the total price by the quantity. A product for 12.50 with a quantity of 5 therefore gives a unit price of 2.50 per unit.
How do I compare two packs by unit price?
Run the first pack, then the second, and compare the two unit prices. For example, 2.80 per kg beats 3.00 per kg even if the first pack costs more overall. The lower unit price is the better deal per quantity.
What is the price per unit useful for?
For shopping, to compare offers fairly. Often the bigger pack is not automatically cheaper, and the unit price shows you at a glance which product really is the better deal.
Which quantities and units can I enter?
You can enter the total price and any quantity, for example 5 pieces or 1.5 kg. You can also add the unit so the result shows the price per kg, litre, or metre.
Does the calculator work for items sold by piece?
Yes. If you enter the quantity in pieces, you get the price per piece. This lets you compare packs with different item counts simply and correctly.
Why is comparing by unit price worth it?
Because the total price alone does not show which offer is cheaper per quantity. The price per unit balances out different pack sizes and makes offers comparable.
