Solar funding 2026 at a glance

Anyone planning a photovoltaic system, storage or a new heating system in 2026 runs into a range of funding options. Some are grants, some are cheap loans, and there are also tax advantages. This overview sorts out the main routes so you know what applies to you. Conditions change regularly, so check the current rules with the responsible bodies before you decide.

What is actually funded in 2026

The biggest advantage is the zero VAT rate: since 1 January 2023, no VAT applies to PV systems, storage and installation on residential buildings, and no application is needed. On top of that, income from systems up to 30 kWp is tax-exempt. At federal level there is also the low-interest KfW 270 loan for photovoltaics and storage, the KfW 442 grant for plug-in solar systems, and the KfW 458 heating grant for switching to heat pumps. The EEG feed-in tariff runs for 20 years.

Note: the older KfW 300 and KfW 261 programmes for PV and storage have ended. Heating funding for private residential buildings has run through KfW 458 since 2024, not BAFA. Today BAFA mainly handles businesses, municipalities and energy advice.

Grant or loan

A grant lowers the investment cost directly and does not need to be repaid. A loan gives affordable financing but must be paid back and may include a repayment bonus. The choice depends on your financial situation and the specific project.

Regional and combined

Many federal states and municipalities run their own grants for photovoltaics, storage and balcony systems. These usually combine with the federal programmes. Rules differ a lot and change often, so check with your own municipality.

Where to find current figures

The official KfW and BAFA websites state the conditions, application routes and funding amounts that currently apply. Consumer advice centres and local tradespeople help with the assessment. The figures here reflect the position of 12.09.2026 and are not a substitute for advice.

Frequently asked questions

What funding is available for photovoltaics in 2026

Most important are the 0 % VAT zero rate, the income tax exemption up to 30 kWp, the EEG feed-in tariff and the low-interest KfW 270 loan. State and municipal grants can be added.

Is there a grant for balcony solar systems

Yes. KfW 442 supports plug-in solar systems with up to 500 euros, depending on the number of modules and a storage module. Income limits apply and the programme is budget-capped. Check current conditions with KfW.

Where does heating funding for private households run

Through KfW 458 since 2024, not BAFA. Conditions were adjusted on 21.07.2026; current rates are published by KfW.

What happened to the KfW 300 and KfW 261 programmes

Both have ended. The loan for photovoltaics and storage now runs through KfW 270, while the balcony solar grant is covered by KfW 442.
