Salary Calculator: Gross to Net 2026

How much net pay will you actually take home from a given gross salary? This salary calculator estimates it for a monthly gross figure and breaks down every deduction. It accounts for wage tax under the progressive 2026 income tax tariff, the solidarity surcharge, church tax and your employee share of social security (pension, unemployment, health and care), each with the right contribution assessment ceiling. All figures are shown transparently, so you can see exactly where your money goes.

How the calculator works

  • 2026 tax tariff: tax-free allowance of EUR 12,348, entry rate of 14 %, top rate of 42 % from EUR 69,879. The tariff is progressive, so the marginal rate rises as income rises.
  • Solidarity surcharge: 5.5 % of the wage tax, payable only above a threshold since 2021; most employees currently pay none (check an official source).
  • Social security: employee shares of 9.3 % for pension, 1.3 % for unemployment, around 8.75 % for health (including half of the 2.9 % average extra contribution for 2026) and around 1.8 % for care, plus 0.6 % if you have no children.
  • Contribution ceilings: about EUR 101,400 a year for pension and unemployment, EUR 69,750 for health and care (2026).
  • Everything runs entirely in your browser; your input is not transmitted to our server.

Note: This is a transparent estimate, not an official payroll result and not tax advice. Tax and contribution values change every year, so check an official source such as the German Federal Ministry of Finance. For binding figures use the official German calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this calculator?

It is a good approximation based on 2026 parameters for orientation. Due to the simplified tariff it can differ by a few percent from the official result.

What is the contribution assessment ceiling?

Above this ceiling no further social-security contributions apply. For 2026 it is about EUR 101,400 (pension/unemployment) and EUR 69,750 (health/care) per year.

Why is there no tax class switch?

Tax class only affects the monthly wage-tax withholding, not the annual income tax of a household. For a single income, the annual result does not change with tax class.

Is my data stored?

No. Everything runs in your browser; your input is not transmitted to our server or stored.

How the calculator works, step by step

The calculator works in four stages. First it derives the wage tax (Lohnsteuer) from your taxable gross income using the progressive income tax tariff, which applies equally regardless of tax class. Next it checks the solidarity surcharge: 5.5 % of the wage tax, payable only once your wage tax crosses a threshold, which means many earners pay none today. If a church tax obligation applies, between 8 and 9 % of the wage tax is added depending on the state. Finally it deducts your employee share of social security: pension 9.3 %, unemployment 1.3 %, health around 8.75 % (including half of the 2.9 % average extra contribution for 2026) and care around 1.8 %, plus 0.6 % if you have no children. Your net pay is the gross figure minus all of these deductions.

Tax classes and allowances in practice

Your tax class largely determines your monthly deduction. Class I applies to singles, II to single parents, III and V to married couples, IV to married couples with equal burdens and VI to additional jobs. Married couples can use class IV combined with a factor for a fairer split. Because wage tax is only an advance payment on your annual income tax, the tax return balances out most differences at the end of the year. The calculator presented here computes income tax under the standard tariff and therefore does not model tax class — tax class affects only the monthly wage-tax withholding, not the annual result for a single income; for married couples, splitting applies, which the calculator does not model.

What the deductions actually pay for

Wage tax funds public services and is an advance on your total annual income tax; any over- or underpayment is usually settled with your tax return. Pension contributions build your retirement income, unemployment insurance funds unemployment benefits, health insurance covers medical care and care insurance covers long-term care. Contribution assessment ceilings mean that above a certain income no further contributions are due: 101,400 EUR per year for pension and unemployment, 69,750 EUR for health and care in 2026.

Does the calculation stay local?

Yes. The salary calculator runs entirely in your browser. Your entries never leave your device, they are neither sent to our server nor stored, so you can safely try different values and compare the results.

Note: Tax rates and contribution figures change every year. For binding values, please check an official source such as the German Federal Ministry of Finance. The calculator is for orientation and does not replace tax or payroll advice.
