How to use this tool (video)

Word Frequency

The Word Frequency tool counts how often each word appears in a text and displays the most frequent terms in a ranked list. Whether you want to understand the text structure or recognize recurring themes: the tool gives you a detailed overview of word distribution. Everything is computed in the browser, protecting your data.

How it works

The tool reads the entire input text and breaks it down into individual words. Punctuation and spaces are treated as delimiters. It then counts how often each word appears and sorts the results by frequency. A concrete example: in the sentence "Das Haus ist groß und das Haus ist alt" the word "das" appears twice, "haus" twice, "ist" twice, and once each "groß", "und", and "alt". The tool sorts these results by descending frequency, so you can immediately see which words are used most often. You can choose whether to consider or ignore capitalization depending on your preference.

What the tool can and cannot do

The Word Frequency tool can reliably count the frequency of every word in a text and sort the results by rank. It works with German and English texts and offers an option to ignore capitalization. However, the tool does not distinguish between word stems and inflected forms: "run", "ran", and "running" are counted as different words, not as variants of the same word. It also does not recognize synonyms or semantic connections. The tool is not a semantic text analysis and makes no statements about which words are most relevant in terms of meaning.

Why local processing in the browser

Everything happens directly on your device. Your text inputs are never sent to a server, there is no upload and no server logs storing your data. You need neither an account nor a sign-up. Once the page has loaded, the tool works offline too because all resources are cached in the browser. There is no server to attack and nothing is transmitted over the network. You can try endlessly, enter different texts, and discard results, because nothing is stored or tracked.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tool ignore capitalization?

You can set whether capitalization is considered or ignored. With capitalization ignored, "Das" and "das" are counted as the same word.

Do I need to be online?

No, after the page has loaded once, the Word Frequency tool works offline. All calculations happen locally in your browser.

Are my data uploaded?

No, your text inputs are never sent to a server. Processing happens exclusively on your local device, with no upload and no third parties.

Can I sort the results by frequency?

Yes, the tool automatically sorts results by descending frequency. The most frequently appearing words are at the top of the list.

Does the tool distinguish word stems like "run" and "ran"?

No, the tool counts each word form individually. "Run", "ran", and "running" are counted as different words because there is no semantic analysis.

Is there a limit on text length?

The tool supports practically no length limit. You can enter texts as long as you wish. Even extensive documents are analysed reliably.
