Vowel Counter

The Vowel Counter tracks how many vowels and consonants a text contains. Whether you want to analyse the linguistic composition of your writing or simply gain a statistical overview: the tool counts every single vowel and displays the result transparently. It runs entirely locally in your browser, protecting your personal data.

How it works

The tool scans the input text character by character and checks whether each character is a vowel. In German, it counts the vowels a, e, i, o, and u as well as the umlauts ä, ö, and ü. All other letters are classified as consonants. A concrete example: in the phrase "Hallo Welt" the text contains 3 vowels (a, o, e) and 5 consonants (H, l, l, W, l, t, with the space not being counted). Another example: "März" contains 2 vowels (ä, e) and 2 consonants (M, r, z). The tool counts across large text volumes as well and displays at the end the total number of vowels and consonants along with their respective share of the total letter count.

What the tool can and cannot do

The Vowel Counter can reliably count vowels and consonants in any text and provides both absolute numbers and percentage shares. It works with German and English texts and correctly recognizes umlauts. However, the tool does not distinguish between long and short vowels, as this is a phonological rather than orthographic distinction. It also does not recognize digraphs like "ei", "eu", "äu", or "ch" as special sound combinations. The tool is not a linguistic text analysis in the academic sense and makes no statements about the difficulty or readability of a text.

Why local processing in the browser

Everything happens directly on your device. Your text inputs are never sent to a server, there is no upload and no server logs storing your data. You need neither an account nor a sign-up. Once the page has loaded, the tool works offline too because all resources are cached in the browser. There is no server to attack and nothing is transmitted over the network. You can try endlessly, enter different texts, and discard results, because nothing is stored or tracked.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tool count umlauts as vowels?

Yes, the Vowel Counter counts German umlauts ä, ö, and ü as vowels as well. They are treated the same way as the standard vowels a, e, i, o, and u.

Do I need to be online?

No, after the page has loaded once, the Vowel Counter works offline. All calculations happen locally in your browser.

Are my data uploaded?

No, your text inputs are never sent to a server. Processing happens exclusively on your local device, with no upload and no third parties.

Does it count Y as a vowel?

No, the Vowel Counter counts only a, e, i, o, u, and the umlauts by default. Y is generally classified as a consonant, though it can function as a vowel depending on context. The tool follows the classic definition.

Can I compare numbers for different texts?

Yes, you can enter as many texts as you like in sequence and compare the results. The tool displays current numbers for each count, so you can view different texts side by side.

Is there a limit on text length?

The tool supports practically no length limit. You can enter texts as long as you wish. Even extensive documents are analysed reliably.
