Sort Letters
The Sort Letters tool orders the characters of any word or text alphabetically. Whether you are solving an anagram or simply need a clear overview: the tool sorts every letter and displays the result in a neat list. It runs entirely locally in your browser, protecting your privacy all the way.
How it works
The tool takes each individual character from your input and arranges it in alphabetical order. By default the sort runs from A to Z. You can also choose the reverse order from Z to A. A concrete example: the word "banana" contains the letters b, a, n, a, n, a. When sorted ascending, the result is aaabnn. When sorted descending, you get nnmbaa. The calculation relies on a simple comparison procedure where each letter is compared with every other and moved to the correct position. Spaces and punctuation can be included or excluded depending on your preference.
What the tool can and cannot do
The sorter can alphabetically order any words or texts and provides both ascending and descending options. It works with German and English text alike. However, the tool cannot derive meaning from the sorted characters: from "aaabnn" it will not automatically reconstruct "banana". It is also not a spell checker and will not suggest correct words. Umlauts like ä, ö and ü are placed at their conventional alphabetical position, between a and b for ä and between o and u for ö and ü. Special characters receive their own position in the character set.
Why local processing in the browser
Everything happens directly on your device. Your inputs are never sent to a server, there is no upload and no server logs storing your data. You need neither an account nor a sign-up. Once the page has loaded, the tool works offline too because all resources are cached in the browser. There is no server to attack and nothing is transmitted over the network. You can try endlessly, enter different words, and discard results, because nothing is stored or tracked.
Frequently asked questions
Can I sort entire sentences as well?
Yes, the tool can process both individual words and complete sentences. For sentences, spaces are either removed or retained depending on your preference, and then all remaining characters are sorted alphabetically.
Do I need to be online?
No, after the page has loaded once, the sorter works offline. All calculations happen locally in your browser and a flaky connection will not interrupt you.
Are my data uploaded?
No, your text inputs are never sent to a server. Processing happens exclusively on your local device, with no upload and no third parties.
Can I reverse the sort order?
Yes, you can switch between ascending (A to Z) and descending (Z to A) sorting. The tool offers a simple toggle for both directions.
How does the tool handle umlauts?
Umlauts like ä, ö, and ü are placed at their conventional alphabetical position. In German, ä falls between a and b, while ö and ü fall between o and u respectively.
Can I sort numbers and special characters too?
Yes, numbers and special characters are also sorted. They receive a position according to the character set, so you get a complete sort of all input.
