Text to URL Slug
The slug converter turns any text into a URL-friendly slug with automatic resolution of umlauts and cleanup of special characters for clean links. Generate clean permalinks for blogs, articles, or product pages.
How it works
The slug converter takes any text and transforms it step by step. First, umlauts are resolved: a becomes ae, o becomes oe, and u becomes ue. Then all special characters and punctuation are removed and replaced with hyphens. Finally the entire text is converted to lowercase. Consider a concrete example: The text "Hallo Welt!" becomes "hallo-welt". The text "How are you today?" becomes "how-are-you-today". Multiple consecutive spaces are collapsed into a single hyphen. Leading and trailing hyphens are stripped so the link looks clean.
What the tool can and cannot do
The tool can convert any text into a URL-friendly slug. It detects and resolves German umlauts, removes special characters, and converts everything to lowercase with hyphens as separators. It works equally well with German and English text. However, it cannot check existing slugs or detect duplicates. The tool does not generate a unique slug if the same input appears multiple times. It is a transformation utility, not a URL manager or database system. Special characters like periods, commas and exclamation marks are removed but the tool does not understand complex URL rules.
Why local processing in the browser
All transformations happen locally in your browser. Your text never leaves your device and is never sent to a server. There is no upload, no server log files and no third party access. You need no account and no registration. After the page loads, the slug converter works offline because the required resources are cached in the browser. There is no server that could be attacked and nothing is transmitted over the network. You can generate as many slugs as you like and discard results at any time.
Frequently asked questions
How are umlauts handled in the slug?
Umlauts are automatically resolved. a becomes ae, o becomes oe and u becomes ue. The result is a pure ASCII slug compatible with every URL.
Do I need to be online?
No, after the page has loaded once, the slug converter works offline. The required assets are cached and a flaky connection will not interrupt you.
Are my data uploaded?
No, your text is never sent to a server. Everything is processed locally in your browser with no upload and no third party.
Can the tool handle numbers in the slug?
Yes, digits are preserved and included directly in the slug. The text "Chapter 3" becomes "chapter-3".
What happens with multiple spaces?
Multiple consecutive spaces are collapsed into a single hyphen. The slug stays clean without duplicate separators.
Is this tool free to use?
Yes, the slug converter is a free tool that runs directly in your browser. There are no hidden costs or limitations.
