ROT13 Cipher

The ROT13 cipher applies the ROT13 rotation cipher to your text. ROT13 is a special case of the Caesar cipher where each letter is shifted by exactly 13 positions in the alphabet. Since the alphabet has 26 letters, applying ROT13 twice returns the original text. The converter is local in your browser and offers a simple way to obscure or reveal text.

How it works

With ROT13, each Latin letter is shifted by 13 positions in the alphabet. Since the alphabet has exactly 26 letters, ROT13 is its own inverse: applying ROT13 to ROT13-encoded text gives back the original. For example, A becomes N, B becomes O, M becomes Z and Z becomes M. The word "Hello" encrypts to "Uryyb". Applying ROT13 again to "Uryyb" gives back "Hello".

What the tool can and cannot do

The converter can encrypt and decrypt text using the ROT13 method. It works only with Latin letters and leaves digits, special characters, and spaces unchanged. ROT13 provides no real security and is not suitable for protecting sensitive data. It is a simple text cipher for creative purposes and as an educational tool.

Why local processing in the browser

All calculations happen locally in your browser. Your text inputs are never sent to a server. There is no upload and no server log files. You need neither an account nor a registration. After the page loads, the converter works offline too. There is no server that could be attacked and nothing is transmitted over the network. You can freely encrypt and decrypt.

Frequently asked questions

What does ROT13 mean?

ROT13 stands for rotation by 13 positions. Each Latin letter is shifted by 13 places in the alphabet. Since the alphabet has 26 letters, ROT13 is its own inverse.

Do I need to be online?

No, after the page has loaded, the converter works offline. The required assets are cached.

Are my data uploaded?

No, your text inputs are never sent to a server. Everything is processed locally in your browser.

Is ROT13 secure?

No, ROT13 provides no real security. It is a simple text cipher and easily broken.

Can ROT13 encrypt numbers?

No, ROT13 encrypts only Latin letters. Digits and special characters remain unchanged.

Why is it called ROT13?

ROT stands for rotation and 13 for the number of shift positions in the 26-letter alphabet.
