Remove Accents

The accent removal tool transforms text with diacritical marks into clean ASCII compatibility. Whether turning a French café into a plain cafe or a German Straße into Strasse: the conversion happens instantly and without any server connection. Everything runs locally in your browser, without a single character leaving your computer.

How it works

The algorithm scans each letter of the input text and identifies diacritical characters, that is, characters with additional marks such as accents, umlauts, or other diacritics. Each such character is replaced by its base ASCII equivalent. A concrete example: the text café becomes cafe, because the é is replaced by a plain e. Similarly, Straße becomes Strasse, as the ß is represented as ss. Further examples include naïve becoming naive and résumé becoming resume. The transformation is purely character-based and follows a fixed mapping table.

What the tool can and cannot do

The tool can remove all common Latin diacritical marks, including umlauts like ä, ö, ü and special characters like ç, ñ, or ł. It processes text of any length and delivers consistent results. However, it cannot process non-Latin scripts such as Cyrillic, Arabic, or Chinese. The ß-to-ss conversion is a German convention and not universal; the tool follows this convention but offers no alternative representation like Swiss orthography. There is no phonetic analysis and no distinction between homographic words.

Why local processing in the browser

Everything happens directly on your device. Your text inputs are never sent to a server, there is no upload and no server logs storing your data. You need neither an account nor a sign-up. After the page loads once, the tool works offline too, because all assets are cached in the browser. There is no server to attack and nothing is transmitted over the network. You can try as often as you like, discard results, and compute anew, because nothing is stored or tracked.
