Pig Latin

Pig Latin is one of the best-known language games in English. It transforms ordinary words into a seemingly secret alphabet and delights anyone who tries to crack the code. The tool runs directly in your browser.

How it works

The rule for Pig Latin is simple and mechanical: for words beginning with a consonant, that consonant or consonant cluster moves to the end of the word and ay is appended. Words beginning with a vowel instead get hay or way added to the end. A concrete example: the word happy becomes appy-hay, because the h moves to the end and ay follows. Similarly, string becomes ing-stray and eat becomes eat-hay. The calculation is a pure character shift that follows the same pattern every time.

What the tool can and cannot do

The tool correctly transforms individual English words and short phrases into Pig Latin. It recognizes consonant clusters like str- or pl-. However, it cannot process German words, as the rules are specific to English pronunciation. It offers no grammar checking and does not interpret sentence structure. No word is translated back; the tool performs a transformation, not a translation.

Why local processing in the browser

Everything happens directly on your device. Your text inputs are never sent to a server, there is no upload and no server logs storing your data. You need neither an account nor a sign-up. After the page loads once, the tool works offline too, because all assets are cached in the browser. There is no server to attack and nothing is transmitted over the network. You can try as often as you like, discard results, and compute anew, because nothing is stored or tracked.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tool work with full sentences?

Yes, the tool processes entire sentences word by word. Each word is transformed according to the Pig Latin rules.

Do I need to be online?

No, after the page has loaded once, the tool works offline. All calculations happen locally in your browser and a flaky connection will not interrupt you.

Are my data uploaded?

No, your text inputs are never sent to a server. Processing happens exclusively on your local device, with no upload and no third parties.

Can I convert German words to Pig Latin?

The rules apply to the English language. German words are not correctly transformed, as the consonant shift is based on English pronunciation rules.

Is the transformation reversible?

The tool displays only the Pig Latin form. To reverse it, you need to know the rule: remove the ending ay and move the shifted cluster back to the start of the word.

Is there a limit on word length?

The tool supports practically no limit. Very long words are transformed the same way as short ones, as long as they are recognized as a single word.
