Number Lines

The line numbering tool assigns a sequential number to each line of text. It is indispensable for developers who need to reference code lines, for writers who want to make citations, and for anyone who needs to structure text. The tool instantly generates a numbered list and makes referencing simple and unambiguous. Everything happens directly in your browser without a single character of your input leaving your computer.

How it works

The analyser reads the input text, splits it into individual lines based on line breaks, and assigns each line a sequential number starting from 1. A concrete example: a text with three lines "First paragraph", "Second paragraph" and "Third paragraph" becomes "1. First paragraph", "2. Second paragraph" and "3. Third paragraph". Empty lines are also numbered unless the option to remove empty lines is enabled. The numbering is strictly sequential and cannot be manually influenced.

What the tool can and cannot do

The tool can add sequential line numbers to any text and offers different numbering format options. It works with any text content and any length. However, it cannot perform any substantive analysis of the text. It does not evaluate quality, correctness, or structure. The tool is a pure numbering utility, not text processing or analysis software. It also cannot detect or correct existing numbering.

Why local processing in the browser

The entire numbering happens directly on your device. Your text is never sent to a server, there is no upload and no server logs. You need neither an account nor a sign-up. After the page loads, the tool works offline too, because all required assets are cached in the browser. No server can be attacked and nothing is transmitted over the network. You can number texts as often as you like, discard results, and generate anew, because nothing is stored or tracked.

Frequently asked questions

Does the numbering start at 1 or 0?

Numbering starts at 1 by default. Each text line is assigned a sequential number starting from 1. There is no option to start at a different number, as 1 is the conventional starting value.

Do I need to be online?

Are my data uploaded?

No, your text is never sent to a server. Processing happens exclusively on your device, with no upload and no third parties.

Can I exclude empty lines from numbering?

Yes, the tool offers an option to remove empty lines before applying numbering. When enabled, only lines containing characters receive a number.

Does the tool support different numbering formats?
