Pet Cost Calculator: how much does a dog or cat cost?
A pet costs far more than just food. The pet cost calculator estimates the costs for a dog or cat – split into one-time purchase and setup plus recurring costs per month and year. Because costs depend heavily on size (larger animals eat more and cost more at the vet), it calculates by size rather than breed.
What is calculated?
- One-time costs: purchase (shelter or breeder), first setup (bowls, bed, leash, box), chip, initial vaccination and neutering.
- Recurring costs: food by size, pet health insurance, toys, accessories, parasite protection and, for dogs, the dog tax (varies by municipality, around €100 a year as a guide).
- Total over lifetime: one-time costs plus annual costs over the typical lifespan (dog about 12 years, cat about 15 years).
Reference values rather than a guarantee
As a typical range, a medium-sized dog costs about 1,500 to 2,500 € per year, a cat about 800 to 1,100 € per year. These are reference values (as of 09/2026), not a real quote. Food quality, vet costs and insurance can vary significantly; vet costs follow the GOT 2022 schedule.
Be honestly informed
If you choose full coverage instead of just an operation-only policy, the monthly premium rises noticeably. The calculator shows realistic premiums, not just teaser offers. All default values can be adjusted.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a dog cost per month?
Depending on size and setup about 80 to 350 € per month: a small dog less, a large dog with full insurance and premium food more.
How much does a cat cost per month?
About 40 to 90 € per month for food, litter and accessories – depending on food quality and whether insurance is added.
Why calculate by size instead of breed?
Size determines food needs, medication amounts and often vet costs more honestly than breed. This keeps the calculator simple and understandable.
Is the animal itself included in the price?
No. Purchase, first setup, chip and neutering are one-time costs that arise separately.
Is my data stored?
No. Everything stays 100% local in your browser and is neither stored nor transmitted.
