Savings goal calculator: how long until you reach your target?
The savings goal calculator shows you how many months you need to save to reach a specific goal. Enter your target, your monthly savings rate and an already-saved amount. Optionally add an expected return and the calculator factors in compound interest for a more realistic time estimate.
Typical savings goals
- Emergency fund: 2–3 months of expenses as a reserve (see our emergency fund calculator).
- Reserves: repairs, new appliances, driving licence.
- Larger purchases: holidays, furniture, a move.
How to use the calculator
- Enter your target in euros.
- Set your monthly savings rate and any already-saved amount.
- Optionally add an expected return in percent per year, for example 4 for a portfolio.
- Click "Calculate time" to see the duration in months and years.
Important note
Without a return the calculator deliberately works without interest, i.e. conservatively. With a return it applies monthly compounding, but that is an assumption, not a guarantee: returns fluctuate and can also mean losses. These figures do not replace individual financial or investment advice.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the time to my savings goal?
Without a return, divide the amount still missing by your monthly savings rate. If 6,000 euros are missing and you save 500 euros monthly, it takes 12 months. With a return, the calculator applies compounding and the time is shorter.
Why can I enter a return?
A savings plan on a savings account or in a portfolio usually grows through interest or appreciation. The optional return makes the estimate more realistic. Without it, the calculation stays deliberately conservative.
Is the return a guarantee?
No. The assumed return is an estimate, not a guarantee. Stocks and funds can fluctuate in value, and losses are possible. It is for orientation only.
Are my details stored?
No. All calculations run 100 % locally in your browser. Your inputs are neither sent to a server nor stored.
