Convert File Sizes Quickly
For upload limits, storage, or download speed, the File Size Converter converts between bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, and petabytes in seconds. It uses the binary base 1024 common to operating systems and storage media. An important distinction: in the decimal system, one kilobyte equals 1000 bytes, but in the binary system it equals 1024 bytes, also called a kibibyte (KiB).
How it works
The conversion is based on the binary base 1024 used by operating systems and storage media. One gigabyte equals 1024 megabytes, one megabyte equals 1024 kilobytes, and one kilobyte equals 1024 bytes. A concrete example: five gigabytes equal 5120 megabytes and 5368709120 bytes, roughly 5.37 billion bytes. In the decimal system, by contrast, one gigabyte equals 1000 megabytes or one billion bytes. The difference matters when it comes to actual storage capacity.
Operating systems such as Windows, macOS, and Linux display storage space in binary. If you see 500 gigabytes on a hard drive, that corresponds in binary to about 500 GiB, while manufacturers often use the decimal base of 1000 and specify gigabytes as 1000 times bytes.
What the tool can and cannot do
The converter reliably converts values between all specified units and shows both decimal and binary conversions. It helps understand and compare storage sizes. However, it is a pure converter without storage or file management capabilities. It cannot convert or compress files, only calculates numbers. It also does not support units outside the usual orders of magnitude.
Why local processing in the browser
The calculation runs entirely on your device. Your input never leaves the computer; there is no server receiving or storing data. Once the page is loaded, the converter works offline too. You can enter various values and try them out without anything being logged or transmitted.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between KB and KiB
KB stands for kilobyte using the decimal base of 1000 bytes. KiB stands for kibibyte using the binary base of 1024 bytes.
Can I convert units like MB and GiB
Yes, the converter switches between bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, and petabytes.
Why does Windows show 1024 instead of 1000
Operating systems use the binary base of 1024. Storage media manufacturers often use the decimal base of 1000.
Are my inputs saved
No. The calculation happens exclusively in your browser. Nothing is transmitted or stored.
Do I need to be online
The page needs to load once. After that the converter works offline.
Are my inputs uploaded
No. All calculations happen locally on your device. Nothing is transmitted.
