Count Characters

The character counting tool analyses your text and delivers a detailed breakdown of all character types. It counts letters, digits, spaces, punctuation, and special characters individually and gives you a complete overview of your text structure. The tool is useful for writers, developers, and anyone who wants to understand and optimise their text. Everything runs locally in your browser without a single character leaving your computer.

How it works

The analyser scans the entire text and categorizes each character into several groups: letters, digits, spaces, and special characters. For each group the count is determined and reported as a percentage of the total text. A concrete example: the text "Hallo" contains 5 letters and 0 spaces, for a total of 5 characters. Write "Hallo Welt" with a space and the total becomes 11 characters, comprising 10 letters and 1 space. The distinction between counting with and without spaces is crucial for precise text analysis.

What the tool can and cannot do

The tool can count and categorize all types of text characters, including German umlauts and special characters. It can count with or without spaces, depending on your setting. However, it cannot perform grammatical or stylistic analysis. It provides no recommendations for text improvement and does not evaluate writing quality. The tool is a pure counter, not a spell checker or style advisor. It also does not automatically detect languages or perform translations.

Why local processing in the browser

The entire analysis happens directly on your device. Your text is never sent to a server, there is no upload and no server logs. You need neither an account nor a sign-up. After the page loads, the tool works offline too, because all required assets are cached in the browser. No server can be attacked and nothing is transmitted over the network. You can analyse texts as often as you like, discard results, and start anew, because nothing is stored or tracked.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tool count spaces as well?

Yes, the tool can count both with and without spaces. You can choose whether spaces should be included in the total. "Hallo" has 5 characters without spaces, "Hallo Welt" has 11 characters with spaces.

Do I need to be online?

No, after the page loads once, the counter works offline. The analysis happens entirely in your local browser.

Are my data uploaded?

No, your text is never sent to a server. Processing happens exclusively on your device, with no upload and no third parties.

Can I count German umlauts and special characters?

Yes, the analyser recognizes all German umlauts like ä, ö, ü as well as the eszett and all other special characters. These are correctly categorized and counted.

Is there a maximum text length?

The tool supports practically no length limit. You can analyse both short sentences and longer documents. Processing happens in the browser and is therefore limited by your device memory.

Is the character counter free to use?

Yes, the tool is completely free. There are no hidden costs, no subscription traps, and no restrictions on usage frequency.
