Compare Checksums

Checksums are used to verify the integrity of files. If a file has been altered, its checksum changes too. This tool compares a file against its checksum or puts several checksums side by side to quickly determine whether they match. Everything runs locally in your browser.

How it works

The tool computes the checksum of a file or compares existing checksums. For hash comparison, the entered values are compared directly. If you upload a file, its checksum is computed and matched against the expected value. Different algorithms like MD5 produce 32-character hexadecimal values, SHA-256 produces 64-character hexadecimal values. Deviations become immediately visible.

What the tool can and cannot do

The tool can compare checksums but cannot sign files or verify certificates. It only confirms whether two values are identical. For checksum generation, the file must be loaded in the browser, which can be problematic for very large files. It supports only simple comparisons, not cryptographic signatures.

Why local browser processing

Local browser processing means your files never reach a server. No uploads, no server logs, no third-party access. You need no account. After the page loads, the tool works offline too. There is no server that could be attacked and your data stays on your device. This is especially important with sensitive data like software downloads or documents.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between MD5 and SHA-256?

MD5 produces a 32-character hexadecimal value, SHA-256 produces a 64-character one. SHA-256 is more secure and collision-resistant than MD5.

Muss ich dafür online sein?

No, after the page loads the tool works offline. Resources are cached in the browser.

Werden meine Daten hochgeladen?

No, your files are never sent to a server. Everything is processed locally in your browser.

Can the tool verify the source of a checksum?

No, the tool only compares values. It cannot verify whether a checksum is trustworthy.

What happens when there is a deviation?

If the checksums do not match, the file has been altered or corrupted. The deviation is displayed.

Can I use the tool for large files?

Yes, but very large files can strain the browser. The computation is performed locally.
