Human-Readable File Size

The byte converter turns any byte count into a human-readable format such as B, KB, MB, GB, or TB so you can easily understand file sizes at a glance. Whether it is a software file, a photo, or a video: this tool gives you the right unit without guesswork. The computation happens locally in your browser.

How it works

The converter uses two different scales for byte unit conversion. The decimal scale is based on powers of ten: 1 KB equals 1000 bytes, 1 MB equals 1000 KB, and 1 GB equals 1000 MB. This scale is used in everyday life and by storage device manufacturers. The binary scale is based on the number 1024: 1 KiB equals 1024 bytes, 1 MiB equals 1024 KiB, and 1 GiB equals 1024 MiB. The abbreviation KiB stands for Kibibyte and deliberately differs from KB. As a concrete example, 1,048,576 bytes equals approximately 1048.6 KB on the decimal scale, but exactly 1024 KiB or 1 MiB on the binary scale.

What the tool can and cannot do

This tool performs conversions between byte units and displays the result in your chosen format. It cannot convert files, compress files, or measure actual file sizes on your hard drive. It only converts whatever you input and does not modify any files on your system. The calculator does not support units such as bits or nibbles, working exclusively with byte-based units. It is not a substitute for a file manager or disk analysis tool.

Why local processing in the browser

All calculations happen locally in your browser. Your inputs are never sent to a server, there is no upload and no server log files storing your data. You need no account and do not need to register. After the page loads, the calculator works offline too, because the assets are cached in the browser. There is no attackable server and nothing is transmitted over the network. You can freely enter values and discard results, because nothing is stored or tracked. Local processing means the data does not need to be sent over a network, saving energy.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between KB and KiB?

KB stands for kilobyte and equals 1000 bytes on the decimal scale. KiB stands for kibibyte and equals 1024 bytes on the binary scale. The difference is deliberately defined this way.

Do I need to be online?

No, the calculator works offline after the page loads. The computation is purely local and requires no Internet connection.

Are my file size inputs uploaded?

No, all inputs stay on your device. There is no upload, no server logs, and no third-party access to your data.

Can the tool also convert bits to bytes?

No, the converter works exclusively with byte-based units. Bit conversions are not supported.

Why are there two different scales?

The decimal scale with 1000 is practical for everyday use and manufacturer specifications. The binary scale with 1024 fits binary systems better, since 1024 is a power of two.

Is the calculator accurate?

Yes, the calculator uses the exact conversion factors 1000 and 1024 and delivers precise results for any byte count entered.
