Text to ASCII Codes

The ASCII converter transforms text into decimal ASCII codes and back. ASCII stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange and is among the oldest character encodings in computing. Every character has a unique number. The converter shows the decimal value for each letter, digit, and special character, and you can convert values back into readable text. Everything happens locally in your browser.

How it works

ASCII assigns a fixed number to each character. The standard table covers 128 characters numbered 0 through 127. The letter A has value 65, B has 66, and the space character has value 32. The word "Hi" has H at code 72 and i at code 105, so converting gives 72, 105. The extended range from 128 to 255 covers additional characters including the euro sign and diacritical marks.

What the tool can and cannot do

The converter can turn text into decimal codes and back. It works with Unicode and returns the numeric value (0 to 65535) for each character. This covers the full ASCII range, plus the euro sign (8364), umlauts and other characters in the Basic Multilingual Plane. Characters outside that plane, such as some emojis from supplementary Unicode planes, cannot be represented completely. This tool is a pure conversion utility and does not perform text analysis or formatting.

Why local processing in the browser

All conversions happen locally in your browser. Your text inputs are never sent to a server. There is no upload and no server log files. You need neither an account nor a sign-up. After the page loads, the converter works offline because assets are cached. There is no server that could be attacked and nothing is transmitted over the network. You can convert as often as you like and discard results because nothing is stored. Local processing also avoids the energy required to transmit data to a remote server.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ASCII and Unicode?

ASCII covers 128 characters from 0 to 127 including basic Latin letters and digits. Unicode is a much larger system covering thousands of characters from writing systems worldwide. ASCII is a subset of Unicode.

Do I need to be online?

No, after the page has loaded once, the converter works offline. The required assets are cached and a flaky connection will not interrupt you.

Are my data uploaded?

No, your text inputs are never sent to a server. Everything is processed locally in your browser with no upload and no third party.

Can I convert extended ASCII characters?

Yes, the converter displays values from 128 to 255 where available. These extended characters include additional symbols and diacritical marks depending on the character set.

Does the converter work with emojis?

No, emojis go beyond the ASCII range and are not supported. Emojis belong to Unicode and require a different converter.

Is the tool free to use?

Yes, the ASCII converter is a free tool that runs directly in your browser. There are no hidden costs or limitations.
